Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that John Davis, 26, Madison, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb to 14 years in prison for distributing heroin. Davis pleaded guilty to this charge on October 18, 2011.

Between September 2010 and April 2011, an individual cooperating with law enforcement bought heroin from Davis and his co-conspirator, Dwight Horton, at different locations in Dane County.

At sentencing, the government argued that Davis's prior state convictions for felony battery, intimidation of a witness, theft, and distribution of cocaine and marijuana called for a lengthy prison term. Judge Crabb agreed and stated that Davis's history of poor adjustment to supervision and his failure to take advantage of the opportunities that had been presented to him in his life gave her little reason to believe that he deserved anything other than a severe sentence. Judge Crabb also noted that Davis had fathered seven children with five different women, yet never supported any of the children financially or emotionally and owed thousands of dollars in unpaid child support.

Horton has pleaded guilty to his role in the case and is scheduled to be sentenced on January 13, 2012.

The charge against Davis were the result of an investigation conducted by the Dane County Narcotics and Gang Task Force and Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigation. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul W. Connell.
